Social welfare for the unemployed

I was always told that social welfare for the unemployed is not good for the country. It encourages people to not work and we will not progress. And it will be a burden on the society to feed them. However, as I grow older, this theory seems to carry less water.

Firstly, not many people will want to live a whole life with the measly income from the social welfare. Most people will want to progress, and to progress is to get a good career.

Secondly, I find a situation where having social welfare for unemployment will be good for both employer and employee. Assume my company want me to take on a new responsibility which will involve certain effort to prepare me for it. At that moment, I am already looking for other jobs outside and once I found it, I will leave. If I take up the offer and leave soon after that will be a waste of time and effort spent on preparing me for the new role. But I can’t tell my company that. Who will tell their company that? Until I found my new job will I be comfortable enough to tell my company right? Or when my company tells me about the plan for me, and it’s not agreeable to me, I can’t tell them yet either. What can be a good reason for rejecting a work assignment? I can only accept it and silently start looking.

If there’s social welfare, my concerns will be gone. I can tender my resignation when I feel like it and look for a new job. If I can’t find one before I leave the company, there’s still income for me while I was hunting job.

I am sure there are other benefits to social welfare. And there will be bad points as well. But if there’s benefits, then it’s worth more investigation and try to streamline it enough to be useful.

Ideas that are not perfect are not bad ideas.

I hate indirect business model sometimes

I don’t know if there’s a correct term for it, so I call it indirect business model. It’s a business model where the consumer is not the customer. The first kind of indirect business model I know of is the tour agencies. The consumer are the people who signed up tour packages. The customer is actually partly them, and partly companies who gives commission to the tour guides and tour agencies for bringing tourists to their shops. A tour package consists of many elements, tour guides, bus, bus drivers, hotels, meals, etc. All these cost money and sometimes the money paid by the tourists are not enough. So what the agencies do is to work with other companies where they’ll bring the tourists to their shops for shopping in exchange for commissions. The tourists get to pay less for their travel in exchange for visits to places they are not interested in.

Another indirect business model is the advertising model. In our tv channels, we don’t really paid to watch the content. The broadcasting station sell time slots to advertisers to earn the money. Therefore the better content that they get, will attract more viewers, which will attract more advertisers which will give them more money, which part of it will be used to get better content. The viewers are the consumers, but the advertisers are the customers.

This advertising model can also be seen in the internet. You have Google and Yahoo, who provide free services to get the eyeballs so that they can sell advertisment spaces. Same for the many review sites out there like hardwarezone.com. Facebook is another example of the advertisement model.

Why do I hate them? This model sometimes is quite useful. Everybody wants to pay less for their holiday tour. Everybody wants to use free services in the internet. But sometimes, it’s a pain. When the consumer is not the customer, they lose the right to demand for good services. The tourists are forced to visit places they are not interested in is 1 example. In the internet, the service provider is more inclined to please their advertisers than the consumers.

I play a game in Facebook called Mafia Wars. I like the game, and has spent many hours on it everyday. My biggest complain about it is that it is not very user friendly. A lot of things you need to do in the game require too many clicks. And they do not seem incline to improve those areas. They probably never will, in fact, they many add more clicks to the process if they think they can get away with it. Why is that so? I suspect that it’s because they are paid for every clicks that people made in their game as each click comes with it some advertisements. So the game company’s aim is not to provide a good experience for their gamers. They only want to do enough to attract people to play the game, and have the game as miserable as they can as it’s generating money. And sometimes, people find a way to do certain things in the game with less clicks using scripts. The gamers who uses those scripts will find that the game has become more enjoyable. But it would not last. It doesn’t pay well to have gamers enjoy the game too much, so the game company will try means to make the scripts fail, so that the user will have to go back to doing more clicks. And the worse thing out of all this is that, some users, when they find out about the scripts, instead of embracing them for making their lives easier, complain to the game companies that users of those scripts are cheating. They love clicking.

Another indirect business model I don’t agree with are employment agencies. This time for a totally different reason. I’ll say this is more a problem of exploitation and that the laws is not doing anything to protect these group of people. The companies looking for people are the consumer. They get employment agencies to look for people to work in their companies. In the old times, they are the customer. They pay the employment agencies. There is another smaller group of consumers, the people looking for job. They get the employment agencies to look for job. In this case, they are actually the product in this business model.

Lately, there’s a trend where the individual, the traditional product, will pay the employment agencies to look for jobs. And the companies, the traditional customer, are paying less or even not paying the agencies any more. In certain cases, I believe the companies are paid commissions to hire the people the employment agencies recommend. This is because the pool of people looking for jobs is huge. more than there are jobs for them. And since they are paying, to get their money, they need to find more jobs. So they share the profits with the companies. In the end, it become profitable for companies to keep hiring people. And since these people are foreigners, and there’s a cap on foreign workers, the companies will try to think of means to get rid of them as soon as they can, so that they can hire more, and hence earn more money. Talk about exploitations. And on top of that, these foreign workers have to put up with bad employment terms.

Why are they willing to put up with these? Pay a fortune to get a shitty job with bad job security? What a good deal. Well most of the time, the employment pool are people from 3rd world countries. They are unskilled and are paid very little in their hometown any way. They dream of getting a good pay in the big cities. And in some cases, they are girls hoping to get a rich man to take them in (read: as wife, if not, mistress) in the big city.

Liverpool lost a game over the weekend again. I hate it when Liverpool loses any game. Not that I expect them to win every game, but the reactions from the press and certain fans is so irritating. Every lost is a disaster. And if the lost happens a bit more frequently, there will be calls for changes. The manager is not good. He has brought the team as far as he can go. He need to make way for better replacements. Nevermind that he has shown in his past few years of service that he has ability in abundance. I am so sick of all these talks. Liverpoolfc is not allowed to make mistakes. All mistakes will be scrutinised and magnified. I don’t know about what other people think, but I thought that Liverpool fc is like a family. I want them to do well. But whatever results they show them, I’ll still love them and support them. When they lose 1 game, the next game I’ll shout louder to cheer them on. Not shout louder to get them down.

And those same people who ask for changes wants big names, big names that is to be bought by money, and yet criticize Chelsea for buying their success. Hypocrites, they are.

Liverpool Vs Singapore: Divded Loyaties? Maybe not.

The last time that Liverpool come play Singapore at the National Stadium, 1 of the Singapore player said that they are probably playing an away game. He’s right. There’s more support for Liverpool than the Singapore team in Singapore.

8 years on, Liverpool came again. Has there been any changes? Yes, it has become worse. I can understand why there’s more support for Liverpool. They have a lot of good players. And more importantly, we can see their games almost every week. We rarely see Singapore games. Support for the Singapore team is probably at it’s highest during the Malaysia Semi-Pro League time. But I was still caught by the surprise by the huge difference. 1 scene stand out in my mind. 2 Liverpool players were brought down by Singapore players on 2 separate occasion. There were jeers on the Singapore players on each of them. Later, a Liverpool player brought down a Singapore players, and the audience clapped.

These leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Those guys are representing our homeland. They deserves at least that little bit of respect. I am a Liverpool fan. I don’t even know the names of the players in the Singapore team. If I am being honest with myself, I would prefer Liverpool to win. But to see Singapore losing 5 goals, I can’t help but feel disappointed as well. The stadium is a sea of red yesterday, because Red is Liverpool’s colour. Red is also Singapore’s color. I feel sad for the Singapore guys that the 1st time they see their home stadium clad in their colours, it’s not for them. I feel sad that the Kallang Wave and Kallang Roar last night is not for them. I feel sad though that much songs of the players were sang in the audience, but none of it is for them. Maybe that’s why they concede 5 goals in the 2nd half. Who can stay motivated if ALL your fans are not only supporting your opponent, they see you as the enemy as well? I remember 8 years ago, there’s still some cheers for Singapore. Why has things deteriorate so badly? I wonder if it’s partly due to our national education gone bad. There seem to be less pride in being a Singaporean nowadays. Singaporeans hated our local drama production, they would much prefer to watch productions from Taiwan or USA. Unless they are doing good overseas, Singaporean artistes are not popular in Singapore. Nobody watches the S-League.

I don’t think the lack of support is likely to improve. I sure above the government can find a way to create a good sense of Identity among us citizens.

Determined and thrifty

Those who played Mafia Wars in facebook will understand this. Normally, I’ll attack people in the fight link. I try to look for people with similar size than me if it’s available. Sometimes the nearest available is 300 less than me. Or if their level is higher than me, I’ll not attack those who are within 50 mafia size of mine. When I attaack those people, if the money gotten from the fight is 72,800, which is the maximum to be gotten from a fight, I’ll click on the attack again button if it’s there. I’ll keep clicking on it until it disappears. Sometimes they died, sometimes they are ghosted, sometimes I am ghosted, sometimes I run out of stamina. Recently I see this in my player update. Such venom and determination. And thrifty too. Saves on the hitlist money. I must have killed him last time.

First Flight Finally

Singapore Flyer

I went to Singapore Flyer for the first time yesterday. Been wanting to try it out but never got around to it. I don’t even know where exactly it is. I can see it’s approximate location, but I don’t really know how to make my way there. I got down the bus at Millenia Walk. Luckily, it’s not too hard. Just walk towards the wheel. It’s not much of a maze.

Good thing about this place is that there’s a lot of nice pictures to take. I did not bring my 18x zoom camera though. I only have a low batt normal camera with me. Luckily the batteries did not go dead on me. I even took a few shots with flash.

This is taken on the way up. Was hoping to capture more of Singapore’s cityscape in the background. But there’s only so much you can do when the cameraman is looking into the lens and not the viewfinder.

Almost reaching the top of the world. At least that’s what the annoucement say seconds after I took this pic.

It’s getting the end of the flight. This is the model of the casino currently under construction in Marina. You can only see it if you took the Singaproe Flyer.

Overall experience is quite nice. I went to the toilet right before the flight, in casse I am to be stuck in there for 6 hours. 😛 But of course, it doesn’t happen. The price is a bit steep, and now I am wondering if I should try the night flight…

It’s getting messy

I’ve been following the drama in AWARE. I’ve spoken to my friends about my disdain to the Christian fundies. Somehow, people will ignore the word fundie and assume I am against Christianity itself. While I don’t really believe in Christianity, I have nothing against it. I have nothing against the belief of the fundies even. What I am against is only the way that the fundies try to get everyone to follow their belief.

I can understand their motive. They think we are heading to our destruction. Being the chivalrous heroes they are, they want to save us from ourselves and hence have us follow them on the path to salvation. I can accept that they try their hardest to convince me. But to force their belief on me is something I frown upon.

Anyway, I’ve digressed. Back to AWARE. I think this AWARE issue is going to be a significant event in future history books. This is going to be a turning point to our society, though I am not sure which direction. Much has been said of Singaporeans being too much of a procrastination type. We can complain about many a thing about the way our country is done, and yet not lift a finger to do anything about it. We can witness a wrong happen in front of our eyes and not do anything. Leave it to the authorities. But in the AWARE EGM, you see 1400+ people pay $40 and sat through several hours to support a cause they believe in. And the cause in my opinion is a noble 1. So does that mean Singaporeans are starting to come out of their shells?

Or it may go other way. The fundies, after been ousted, have gone underground. They have sent complain letters to MOE to cancel AWARE’s sexual education to schools. They have attacked Siew Kum Hoong’s role in the AWARE EGM. They are even circulating false info to do a character assasination on him as he’s trying to go for a 2nd term as NMP. I have a very big problem about the latest incident. It has gone so bad that Siew has gone to the police. A libel suit is hanging in the air. While I agree that the line has been crossed, and that he’s every right to correct the injustice done to him, I think this is going to muddy the water somewhat. Long has there been complains about our ruling party use of the libel suit to destroy oppositions. The lack of decent opposition politicians is partly blamed on this issue. People had hoped that such libel suits be stopped. Let there be free speech they say. Now, 1 of the proponent of free speech is possibly going to use libel suit on his opponent. The line is crossed, but where is the line? Whose line? Could be a can of worms we are opening. If Siew do nothing, then it’s going to get worse for him. I sure hope it’s me thinking too much about these.

Love and Commitment

They say marriage is a lifelong commitment. They also say tht marriage is the destination for 2 person in love. By extention, I take that to mean that the destination for 2 person in love is to give commitment to each other. To promise each other that you will be with them forever.

I used to not believe in commitment and promises in Love. By that, I don’t mean that I am a player. I do not belief in the “No giving up the forest for the tree” shit either. It’s not that I am incapable of giving commitment, but it’s that I do not believe that commitment is neccessary. If you really love someone, then you won’t do things to hurt him/her. For simplicity, I’ll use the female form when I am talking about love interests. No more him/her or he/she. Just plainly, her or she.

Anyway, I was saying that if you love someone, then you won’t hurt her. Not on purpose anyway. And if you do, it’s because you think it’s better for her. Unless You have a change of heart that is. If that happens, all the promises in the world count for nothing. Why would you want to keep someone who don’t love you by your side? What’s the point? And all the promises in the world will not be able to prevent your loved 1 from having a change of heart. It just happen, whether they meant it or not.

So what’s the “used to not believe” part in my statement about? Do I have a change of heart or do I now believe that promises and commitment is a necessary evil? Love is too unpredictable and too abstract a concept to grab firmly. No matter how strongly you feel for someone this moment, the next moment may have you getting second thoughts. I’ve seen couples very much in love, but the feeling die out over time. I’ve seen someone walk away from his wedding because he he met someone that sweep him off his feet, only to realise that the wife he left behind at the altar is actually his true destiny. I’ve also seen a faithful husband fell in love with another woman, but chose to stay with his wife and put a lid on what is possibly his true love. I’ve also heard many people telling me there’s no perfect person for you. You have to make do with the nearest match you come across and make the most out of it. Walking away at the “next best option” that crosses your path is not going to get you far. Because the “next best option” may not be the best option after all. And even if it is, you have a certain moral obligation, responsibility to your current choice.

So what is more important?
1. There’s no point staying together if your heart is not there
2. I’ll be with you through thick and thin, no matter what happens

There’s probably no good answer. I used to chose 1. Now the line has shifted to somewhere in between. Where exactly the line is at will only be revealed when I come across it. I hope I don’t.

My view on what’s wrong with Singapore

I am just an average Joe. I don’t have much experience with politics. But I have a view on the current situation of Singapore. I don’t normally blog about political stuff. Partly because I am afraid of getting into trouble, and partly because I am quite influenced by the blogs I read. Most of the time I find myself agreeing with them (I guess if I do not agree with them, I won’ really be reading them much). It ends up that I don’t have much of an original view. I don’t want to be a copycat and just regurgitate what I read from them. And I can’t write as well as them anyway. This post is something I have not come across before. There’s not too much research put into it. It’s just a personal view on a situation. It would be good if there are comment on the validity of my view.

I think there are 2 phases to a country, nation-building (建国) phase and nation-running (守国) phase. Not sure if there is any official term for that. Maybe we can call it developing country and developed country. For now, I’ll stick to use my own words.

For nation building, it’s when a country is new. A lot of things need to be done to survive and to bring the nation to the next phase. What’s at stake is only the future. You don’t lose much of what you already have because you have nothing much anyway. What you need is the ability to react fast to changes, and to improve at as fast a speed as you can. You don’t have to worry too much about protecting what you have. You also need to make sure there are not too many voices around, as that will only distract you from what you need to bring the nation forward. If there are negative voices, you may even need to eliminate it as this may set you back considerably. This is the time where we need a good, strong and visionary leader. All our future will depend on the leader, but at least we have nothing to lose.

During nation running phase, the country has developed somewhat. Other than improving, we need to protect our assets. By now, we would have amassed some wealth; we stand to lose them all if things are not done properly. We need to divert our attention on protecting what we have and not jus put all our efforts into moving forward. We need more measures in place that will restrict the government from doing things that might harm ourselves. The government will probably have less leeway for that.

In Singapore, I think our government has done very well during our nation-building phase. Our then Prime Minister, now Senior Minister, is an exceptionally good and visionary leader. He has brought us leaps and bounds to what we are today. We owe what we have today to him. I speak this from the bottom of my heart, and I am sure not too many of us will disagree.

Over the years, our government has repeated says that it’s OK to have 1 party winning every election, as long as that party is constantly changing and adapting to the situation. I am not sure if I agree with that. It sounds reasonable though. But the thing is, I don’t think we have adapted well to situation and that there’s enough changes made. We still have a law that can put anyone behind bars without a trial. We still have a police force that can deny a person caught a lawyer when they interrogate him. Our justice system is under the payroll of the government. We still have a fear of racial riots if the wrong thing is said. We still have a government that can pretty much do what they like if they think it’s right.

A government that can pretty much do what they like if they think it’s right. It’s a good thing to have during the nation-building phase. It’s not so attractive now as we may stand to do lose a lot if 1 day the government becomes corrupt. I am not accusing the government has gone corrupt now. But nobody knows what will happen in the future. Government can change, personnel can change in the government, and people can change. And we stand to lose too much when that happens to not try to control it now while we still have a chance.

And that’s what I think is wrong with Singapore now. We are using the wrong management style for our country.

The customs machine to scan our passports is on Windows

I discovered that the machines that scanned our passports as we clear the customs are on Windows. How do I know that? It gave me the blue screen as I put in my passport to scan. And then it do a core dump. So me and all those queueing behind me got to queue again at the other rows. As I was in the queue in the next row, I see the machine reboot, showing the windows logo. And it shows the windows desktop after booted and display a message that say the machine just recovered from a fatal error. After that my new machine managed to scanned my passport successfully and I left.
